Tulips are popping up everywhere- a sure hallmark of spring !
Chances are you might be buying or receiving some cut tulips in the next little while, so I thought it might be timely to share some really cool facts about them. Here we go:

Tulips are part of the lily family

Tulips point in the direction of the sun

Tulips are almost perfectly symmetrical

Tulips continue to grow in your vase or arrangement even after they are cut

Tulips and fruit don’t get along.. some fruit produces ethelyn gas which kills off tulips (so they should not be stored together)

Tulips and daffodils don’t get along in a vase ...never put them in a vase together as the tulips will die

Tulips are edible, they have been used in place of onions and can be used for making wine... in fact they are said to be known for saving the Dutch from the famine during WWII when they were eaten with bread (try this at your own risk as some parts of the tulip can also be harmful whem ingested)

On the other hand, tulips can be poisonous to pets if they eat them

Tulipmania was a real thing.. during the tulip craze in the 1600s, a tulip was worth more than the value of a house or ten times the average salary😱

Speaking of money, a common trick for getting your tulips to stand up straight in a vase is to add a penny or half a teaspoon of sugar to the bottom (which is why those of you who ordered tulip vases from me will notice a penny in the bottom :) Let me know if it worked !


Not only are tulips truly stunning flowers.. but as you can see, they also have a very colourful history. I really love using tulips, so you may notice me slipping them into designs all through the year.
